5 Tips to Avoid Munchies When you are High


If you are a cannabis user, you probably know that munchies are almost an unavoidable part of getting high. There probably goes no marijuana session, anywhere in the world, without a fridge getting empty. And excessive eating has actually become a popular stoner stereotype now.

But can’t you control it somehow?

Well, if you want to gain some weight, or are suffering from a condition that may suppress your appetite, this effect of marijuana may be really helpful for you. However, not every cannabis user is looking for that. And if you are also one of those, you may wake up the next day feeling very guilty. You probably have experienced it already!

For our convenience, let’s just say you are a usual evening smoker. This will make it easier to figure out what healthy foods you may need throughout the day. A healthy schedule may look like this:

  • Breakfast: Water, a cup of coffee, some oatmeal or fruits.
  • Lunch: Wholemeal toast with some mixed pepper.
  • Snacks: Fruits, cottage cheese, a protein shake etc.
  • Dinner: Roast Chicken, Beans, Kale, Brown rice etc.

For some people, this list may be a little too healthy. But don’t worry, it’s just a guideline. The major point here is to eat properly three to four times a day. This way you will feel satisfied for a long time. And thus, you won’t eat too much when you get high.

Keep Yourself Hydrated

As a rule of thumb, you should consume at least two liters of water every day. However, as per a survey, approximately 80 percent of Americans admit that they don’t consume enough water. 

Now, the thing that you must note here is that sometimes your mind may confuse thirst with hunger. So, you must keep yourself hydrated. During your cannabis sessions too, whenever you feel you are hungry, first, try to drink some water and see what happens. The chances are that you’re unstoppable urge to munch on anything you may find gets suppressed as you hydrate yourself. 

Furthermore, staying hydrated may also help you combat some other side effects of cannabis, including cottonmouth, dizziness and dry eyes, etc.

Distract Yourself

If you keep focusing on how hungry you are for a very long time, there, definitely, will come a time when you’ll give in. And in no time, your entire fridge will be empty. So, a better way to deal with this is to distract yourself somehow. Pick up anything you like, such as doing chores, dancing, taking a bath etc.

Another thing you can do is to get out and explore. Nature, in itself, is a wonderful thing. But when you are stoned, it’s even more amazing. You may also go to a friend or visit a club or restaurant etc. However, you should keep in mind that driving under cannabis influence is illegal, and more importantly, dangerous. And so, you shouldn’t even think of doing that. Also, there are some places that don’t even allow getting high in the first place. Therefore, if you’re going out, you need to be a bit careful.

Rewire Your Brain

Our brains are actually designed to enjoy eating. And this urge to find the food and consume it is necessary for us to survive. If we talk at the scientific level, when we eat something, our brain releases a chemical called dopamine. This is the chemical that makes us feel good. And the brain releases it every time we do something that we like. The release of dopamine is even more when we eat foods that are rich in sugar or fats. And as a result, we feel even more rewarded. For this exact reason, we tend to reach for unhealthy foods when we are high. 

However, do you know you can actually control this urge of yours?

All you need to do is to stop yourself from eating such foods for some time, and with time, your brain will stop craving them. Easy-Peasy, right? Not so much! In fact, the process is nowhere near easy! You need a lot of willpower and a decent amount of time to do this. However, doing it is totally possible. And the results are actually worth it!

Consume a Different Strain

Cannabis has many different strains. And each one has its own properties. Given this, you should note certain cannabis strains are more appetite-inducing than others. And don’t assume that Indica strains are more likely to make you hungry than Sativa. It’s actually about what cannabinoids the strain carries. If your strain has a high THC level, but very less of other cannabinoids, you are more likely to raid your fridge
